You've probably heard it a thousand times from your skincare-loving friend and seen it all over your socials: SPF is the ultimate skincare tip because it protects your skin all year round. Many people think sunscreen is only necessary on hot summer days, but did you know that UV radiation already increases significantly in spring?

In winter, UV rays are weaker, but as soon as spring arrives, UVB radiation intensifies. This means your skin is more prone to burning and premature aging. Even on cloudy days, UV rays penetrate through the clouds, so wearing SPF daily is a must!

The Difference Between UVA and UVB Rays

UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and are responsible for premature aging and wrinkles. They can also cause indirect DNA damage and contribute to the risk of skin cancer.

UVB rays are more intense and cause direct damage, such as sunburn. They play a major role in the development of skin cancer and affect the outer layers of the skin.

A broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays and is essential for healthy skin.

What Do PA++ and SPF Mean?

Besides SPF, you often see the term PA followed by plus signs (+). This indicates the level of protection against UVA rays:

  • PA+: Basic UVA protection.
  • PA++: Moderate protection, suitable for daily use.
  • PA+++: High protection, ideal for longer sun exposure.
  • PA++++: Very high protection, perfect for intense sun exposure and sensitive skin.

SPF (Sun Protection Factor), on the other hand, measures how well the sunscreen protects against UVB rays, which cause sunburn and skin damage.

Can You Use Regular Sunscreen on Your Face?

Yes, you can but it’s not always the best choice. Many body sunscreens contain ingredients that can be too heavy or irritating for facial skin, such as thick oils, fragrances, or alcohol. Remember that nostalgic Nivea scent? Great for memories, but not so great for your face, as it can clog pores, cause irritation, or leave a greasy feel.

Can Sunscreen Replace Your Daily Moisturizer?

Yes, sunscreen can double as a daily moisturizer, as long as you choose a hydrating formula that suits your skin type. Many modern facial sunscreens contain skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and ceramides, which not only protect against UV rays but also nourish and hydrate the skin.
